Dismount – Reflection 2

This is the second chapter of my new book
“Enfolded in God’s Arms: 40 Reflections to Embrace Your Inner Healing”

For I am the LORD your God
who takes hold of your right hand and says to you,
Do not fear; I will help you.
Isaiah 41:13 (NIV)

“When you discover you’re riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount.” This statement, attributed to ancient Dakota Indian lore, holds much wisdom for those who feel stuck in life.

Why is it so hard for us to dismount when areas of our lives clearly aren’t working? Do we not see what’s happening? Are we afraid to make a change? Do we insist that this time it will work out? Perhaps all of the above!

When we find ourselves in such a situation, the first step is to pull up the reins, stop, and observe what’s going on. Why do we react the way we do? Could there be a different perspective on our circumstances?

As you begin to quiet your fears, bravely gaze deep inside your soul. There you can discover clues to your quandary and how to move forward. But you need a hand to hold, a gentle guide for your steps. Perhaps that hand belongs to Jesus.

Where is he? He may speak through a friend who quietly listens and helps. Or he himself may whisper in your ear as he holds you close, “It’s time to dismount.”

Are you ready to get off the horse? Here’s all you need to do. Mentally swing one leg behind you to the ground. Then release your other foot from the stirrup. You’ll find yourself on firm terrain with a fresh perspective, ready to walk with Jesus in an exciting new direction.

Lead me by your truth and teach me,
for you are the God who saves me.
All day long I put my hope in you.
Psalm 25:5 (NLT)

Be Still for a Silent Moment with God

Digging Deeper

Is there something you should stop doing but you don’t think you can? What is it?

How could you begin to look at your situation from a new angle?

In what ways could God give you the strength to make changes?

Prayer for Today

Sometimes I feel like I’m moving fast yet going nowhere. But I can’t seem to stop. I need your guidance and protection, God. Give me the strength to stop what I’m doing, turn around, and follow your lead. More than anything, I want to walk with you today, tomorrow, and forever. Amen.
