Recently I read a short quote by John Newman. “I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons.” Of course, there’s an obvious meaning – that we’re all connected and nobody is really alone. And that’s nice to know – especially in disconnected America where independence is king.
But here’s another angle. It seems most comforting to realize I am standing on the shoulders of so many men and women of the past. I like knowing that there is a link connecting me back two thousand years to the earliest Christians. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here.
It feels safe and secure to know that I’m part of the larger picture. I’m not just standing alone. All the others – the cloud of witnesses from the letter to the Hebrews – are with me as I run my own personal race.
What do you think?
